Point 14 - Museum of Local History

Museum of Local History

In 1924, the "Association for Local History Research of Schirgiswalde, Kirschau and Crostau", founded in 1922, decided to set up a local history museum at the request of school principal Franz Rösler and businessman Carl Swoboda.

The eagerly collected objects were initially presented in school rooms, but in 1944 they were banished to the school floor or schoolyard. Carl Swoboda put a lot of energy, time and money into converting a barn in Hentschelgasse near Schirgiswald's Obermarkt.

In 1947, a simple museum was opened, which enjoyed steadily growing popularity. After the building had to be closed due to dilapidation, the museum moved to a building on Melzerberg in 1987. In 1993, it found new premises in the former paper factory's caretaker's house, surrounded by ancient vaults and cellars.

The museum provides a good insight into the history of our town. Documents, books and various objects show the guild system, the administration of justice, the school system and the economic life of past centuries. Whether weaving loom, stocking loom from 1812, sabres, old sculptures, Luther Bible, guild seals, pictures of great sons of the town - everything finds its appreciation here.

Schirgiswalde is also a town of nativity scenes, which is why one part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Schirgiswalde and Bohemian nativity scenes. The show forging in the craft cellar is also particularly interesting!
