Point 12 - Town Hall
Town Hall
The town hall is built in a clear neoclassical style, with a risalit in the central section that is crowned with a pediment. On the elegant rear door, the year 1818 and the letters J. M. in the keystone indicate the origin of the building. It was once built by the Menzel family as a trading house for the canvas trade.
On the first floor, it has vaulted rooms with wrought-iron grilles, which are a reminder of its original use as storage rooms.
In 1869, the Evangelical Lutheran parish acquired the property and housed its school in the building. When the standardized school was introduced after the First World War, the town set up its town hall here.
Above the entrance is the town's coat of arms, which shows a strong town wall with gate towers and battlements, although the town never had one.
When Emperor Leopold I elevated the town to a city in 1665, he chose a coat of arms with a sword arm and immortalized the then landlord of the town, Otto von Ottenfeld.
Today, the premises are used by the town council of Schirgiswalde-Kirschau.
