Point 11 - Protestant St Michael's Church
Protestant St Michael's Church
Schirgiswalde has always been strongly Catholic in character. After the town joined Saxony in 1845, more and more Protestant residents moved in. The growing Protestant community soon wanted its own Protestant church. Until then, the Protestant Christians always had to walk to Crostau for church services.
The foundation stone for the red brick church was laid on 2 May 1895. On 28 September 1896, the day before St Michael's Day, the church was solemnly consecrated to St Michael the Archangel.
Originally, the church had three bells (today two) and a neo-Gothic interior. After the Second World War, the interior of the church was completely renovated and modernized. Instead of an altarpiece, there are now three colourful window paintings depicting the creation, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and the archangel Michael. The organ from the Eule company in Bautzen has been preserved to this day.
