Point 8 - THÜRMCHEN
THÜRMCHEN
This attractive building is one of the oldest in the city. It was built around 1740 as a farm and guest house.
The courtyard of the "Thürmchen" with its surrounding wooden gallery used to be one of the most romantic corners in Schirgiswalde. In 2002, it was roofed over by the current owner and thus became an original space for celebrations of all kinds.
The exact chronicle can be traced back to the middle of the 18th century and is based on a handwritten commemorative inscription that was discovered in the dome of the Thürmchen in 1877. According to it, the judge Zacharias Wenzelslaus sold the property to his son-in-law in 1772, which was followed by several changes of ownership.
In 1864, Bernhard Mildner and later his daughter Theresia became owners of the house and property. The first tenant was Adolf Brendler in 1877. The chaplain and later court preacher used the "Thürmchen" for the Catholic Journeymen's Association of Schirgiswalde.
Again and again, numerous associations were based here. From 1886, the married couple Benno and Marie Mannheim ran the house for over 60 years and welcomed many bishops and high clergy in their rooms during this time. Even Prince Johann Georg zu Sachsen, brother of the last King Friedrich August von Sachsen, visited the "Thürmchen" in 1897.
Benno died in 1917 and left the inn to his wife Marie. Mother and daughter continued to run the business until 1932, and Benno's sister Marie took over in 1937.
The Pacher family later became the other owners. However, they quickly gave up the business and it was used as a company holiday home during GDR times.
In 1992, the Wolfgang Schulze family bought the Thürmchen and opened their business in 1993. Further renovations, gastronomic skills and a lot of hard work made the old house a popular place to stay again, now successfully run as a country hotel by son Matthias.
