Point 7 - King Albert Oak

King Albert Oak

On 23 April 1898, King Albert of Saxony celebrated his 70th birthday and at the same time his 25th anniversary of reign. Schirgiswalde also wanted to honour this anniversary appropriately. To this end, the town's authorities and associations gathered and, in a festive ceremony, planted this oak tree and erected a memorial stone with a corresponding inscription.

In 1945, it was feared that the memorial stone would be destroyed like many other monuments at that time. For this reason, the forester buried the stone directly under the oak tree. Towards the end of the socialist GDR, such "feudalistic remnants" were no longer rigorously rejected. The memorial stone was remembered, dug up again, restored and erected in its original place in 1988.

May the King Albert Oak be preserved for a long time to come to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
