Point 5 - OLD ROAD
OLD ROAD
This narrow road, bordered by high walls, used to be the main road through Schirgiswalde. In 1846/47, the traffic connection from Kirschau via Schirgiswalde to Sohland was extended. With the beginning of industrialisation, a new road was laid around the church hill in 1879.
Thanks to the initiative of the then pastor Sauer, a large factory was built on this road - today's Sauerstraße - which later became a weaving mill, where many residents found work.
In 1910 Franz Grohmann founded a haulage business. With his horse-drawn carriage and covered wagon he transported goods for local businessmen. In 1944, the German Wehrmacht conscripted horses and wagons for war purposes. Franz Grohmann died in 1948.
His grandson, Christian Grohmann, was able to renew the concession, which had lapsed during the war, in 1988. In 1990, the company became Spedition Grohmann, a shipping company.
Today, ten trucks are driving across Europe in the third generation - as successors to the former covered wagon teams.
